The application deadlines for the INBT Master’s Co-Op Program are:
- April 1st for the July-December cohort.
- October 1st for the January-June cohort.
However, some companies have different deadlines for their co-op positions. It’s a good idea to start looking for and applying to co-op positions as soon as possible.
Students are encouraged to start researching and applying to co-op positions at companies as soon as they know they want to participate in the program. INBT staff will support and help guide students towards opportunities after the internal review process.
To apply:
- Submit online application here before deadline (April 1st for the July-December cohort, October 1st for the January-June cohort).
- Earlier submissions are highly encouraged as they can help INBT staff plan ahead.
- Submit two professional references to inbtco-op@jh.edu.
- The INBT Master’s Co-Op program committee will reach out to you to schedule an interview.
This depends on which MSE program you belong to and how you structure your courseload. Talk to your advisor about how you want to fulfill your degree requirements. Students typically co-op at the start of the spring semester through to the summer (January-June) or from summer through to end of the fall semester (July-December).
The Mechanical Engineering department has samples of degree schedules here. Please note that ChemBE and MatSci have different course requirements.
Students participating in the Co-Op must apply for non-resident status through their department and pay 10% of standard tuition for the semester.
Yes. At least half of the students who have completed the program have been international students.
International students must apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) at least two weeks before their Co-Op starts. You must be in valid F-1 status and have completed at least one academic year before you are eligible for CPT (although there are some exceptions).
Your faculty advisor and one other faculty member will read and approve your essay. In some cases, your corporate mentor may serve as your second reader. After it is approved, your essay will typically be published to JHU’s online library. However, if the company has proprietary concerns about your essay’s contents, this process might be adjusted to accommodate those concerns.
The Co-Op Program fulfills the same number of credits as MSE graduate research for students on the essay-based master’s track. Talk to your advisor about how you want to fulfill your degree requirements.
Students participating in the Co-Op must apply for non-resident status through their department and pay 10% of standard tuition for the semester.
Typical internships last about 3 months and can be paid or unpaid. A 6-month co-op gives students more time to embed themselves in the organization where they’re working and practice the skills they learn. Our Co-Op students receive a full-time salary commensurate with their experience as well as college credit for their work.
Many INBT Master’s Co-Op Program alumni have completed their essay requirements despite their research being proprietary and/or confidential. There are many tools that can protect proprietary information in student essays, including obscuring details (e.g. “Protein A” instead of a specific name), requiring faculty assessors to sign an NDA, and placing the essay on a publication embargo so that the essay will not be publicly available until a set number of years have passed. If this is a concern for your co-op employer, you can work with your corporate mentor and faculty advisor to come to a satisfactory arrangement.
