While not obligatory, co-mentoring is a highly effective way to train postdoctoral fellows in an interdisciplinary field. Therefore, NTCR fellows often have two mentors, one primary and one secondary mentor, which they select before the summer of their first year in the program. One mentor is in an engineering department; the other mentor has expertise in molecular and cellular cancer biology and/or clinical cancer therapeutics/diagnostics.

A series of informal luncheon meetings with the faculty as well as the annual retreat, held in October each year, provide the fellows with an opportunity to become acquainted with the research activities of each of the mentors.
